. . .That early AAUW members had to disprove some of the strange
myths that abounded in their time. Dr. Edward Clark, a professor
at the Harvard Medical School, claimed in his book Sex in Education
that higher education for women would impair their physical health,
and that an educated woman would produce a malformed offspring.
The idea was that studying drew the nourishing blood from the fetus
to the brain. That off-the-wall notion was disproved in AAUW’s
first studies.
Thanks to Jo Harberson
who shared AAUW’s past, present and future at a Branch Leadership Workshop
on August 1, 2009. We are passing along snippets of her
history gems in this weekly column. |
