Blue skies, mild temperatures and excellent food greeted the 185 registered bikers who turned out on Saturday, March 27 for this year’s wildly successful Worldly Wanda Tour de Fremont.

One of the reasons for the high number of cyclists had to do with the AAUW Fremont Branch’s collaboration with the Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club.   The partnership really boosted the number of participants.

New member Bjorg Swint and the Sisters of the Holy Family managed the first water stop at Aqua Caliente Park.  The Sisters baked some yummy muffins for the cyclists and the bicyclists appreciated the very vocal enthusiasm that greeted them.

Harriet Despeaux, Anne and Gordon MacLeod and the Sports Basement teamed up to cover the stop at Alum Rock Park.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were the favorite snack there.  The Sports Basement provided gels and bars.

The Girl Scouts with leader Denise Wilkerson as well as Kathy Gilbert, Kathleen Schuler and REI were in charge of the last stop.  Baked, salted little red potatoes were a hit with cyclists there.

Many more people to recognize and thank:  The Newark Jazz Quartet entertained the riders; delicious chili was provided by Mary Lynn Pelican and friend Bill; Bruce Keft was a big help with setting up and taking down signs; and Ninette Pierce handled the registration with a crew of volunteers.

Dale Hardware and Team in Training donated cloth bags for each cyclist and we filled them with discount coupons and other promotional items from vendors and agencies.  Many businesses donated goods for the waterstops and several vendors had tables at the finish line at Central Park.

Especially appreciated was the Worldly Wanda Tour de Fremont jersey and vest designed by Marcella.   It made us all look so professional!

Just a thought for next year:  We should consider more volunteers for such a large group of cyclists to add more water stops, etc.

However, thanks to all for making this a very special Worldly Wanda Tour de Fremont.

Here are a few pictures of the touring bikers, and here are a few more pictures!
